The believer’s illusion of afterlife is not necessarily better than the illusion of an atheist that life has a real, innate meaning, despite of, or even because of, its finitude. The difference is that religions offer various easily understood, “prepackaged” illusions and meanings, while every atheist has to create his/her own, elaborate ones. In any case, very few – if any – can live without this self-deceiving thinking. To find a meaning or purpose in the insignificant human life is but a delicate make-believe process.
